Seventy five mine workers trapped underground overnight after a fire at a Zimbabwean platinum mine were rescued on Tuesday, the company has said.

Mimosa mine, jointly owned by Impala Platinum and Aquirus of South Africa, said no injuries were recorded and all workers had been accounted for.

"A number of employees who were accommodated in refugee bays due to low visibility are now in the process of being moved to the surface,” the company said in a statement.

"The fire has been contained. All employees have been accounted for and no injuries have been reported.”

The company said it was too early to assess the damage or the likely impact on output of 104 000 ounces of platinum group of minerals a year.

Mimosa is Zimbabwe’s second biggest platinum mine and produces 20 per cent of the group’s total output.
