A Kenyan studying in the US has confessed to killing a housemate and then eating the man's heart and part of his brain, police in the state of Maryland said Thursday.

Some media reports in the US are referring to the crime as a case of “cannibalism.”

Alexander Kinyua, a 21-year-old student at Morgan State University in Baltimore, has been charged with murdering a man believed to be a 37-year-old Ghanaian, Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie, who was reported missing on May 25.

Mr Agyei-Kodie was described by authorities as “very intelligent”.

He had been staying at the Kinyua family's home in Joppatowne, Maryland, for the past six months.

Mr Kinyua admitted to killing Mr Agyei-Kodie by cutting him up with a knife, police said.

The Kenyan then “ingested [the victim's] heart and portions of his brain,” according to police documents cited in media reports.

Less than two weeks ago, Mr Kinyua was charged with beating a different man with a baseball bat, fracturing the victim's skill and causing him to lose sight in one eye, Baltimore police indicated.

Mr Kinyua was released on $220,000 bail on May 20 in connection with that attack.

Mr Kinyua's brother, Jarrod, on Tuesday found two metal tins that held a human head and two hands in the basement of the family's home, according to police.

The rest of the body was said to be found in a trash container at a Baptist church in another Maryland town.
