Rwanda's umbrella organisation for the survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, otherwise known as 'Ibuka', has announced that the Rwandan government is set to construct three genocide memorial sites along the Ugandan shores of Lake Victoria.
The announcement was made Wednesday by Ildephonse Karengera, the man in-charge of Rwanda's National Council for the fight against Genocide.
"The sites will be built in three different locations of Ggolo, Kasensero, and Lambu along the shores of Lake Victoria, which are home to remains of over 10,000 Tutsis who were massacred or dumped alive into Rwandan rivers and ended up in Lake Victoria", added Mr Karengera.
Like with Kigali's Gisozi memorial site, the three sites to be constructed in Uganda will each have a section for child victims, another section highlighting world history in regard to genocide, and a third section depicting the history of genocide in Rwanda.
The construction will begin before the end of this year.
Mr Karengera said that out of the existing 400 memorial cites in the whole Rwanda, plans are underway to have one genocide memorial site in each of the 30 districts in the country.
Ibuka has been planning for a formal commemoration for the victims whose remains are in Uganda ever since those remains were collected together in 2004.
