Pamela Jelimo and Thomas Musinde were the talk of town Wednesday as Athletics Kenya hosted its first sprint, relay and field events championship at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Jelimo, Kenya’s first woman gold medallist after her 800 metres triumph at the “Bird’s Nest” in Beijing in 2008, ran the 4x400m relay and her 53-second leg had coaches rubbing their hands with glee.

“Her time shows that she is coming back and I’ve advised her coaches to enter her in small meetings in Europe where she can win and get her confidence back,” said national sprints coach Stephen Mwaniki.

“It won’t be wise to enter her in big meetings as psychologically is she doesn’t win gradually, it will affect her comeback.

“(Former world champion Maria) Mutola (Mozambique) used to run 51 and Jelimo’s 53 shows her elite form is returning.”

Meanwhile, Musinde, the fastest Kenyan to ever live since the advent of electronic timing, has made an impassioned plea for a manager to help him regain the form that saw him break the national record in 2007.

Field events

“I am just getting back into competition since 2008, but I very much need to have a manager who can enter me in a couple of grand prix races,” the Kenya Navy speedster said at the Nyayo National Stadium Wednesday after the one-day sprints and field events meet.

The event was sponsored by AK and organised by their Nairobi branch to help prepare sprinters and field event athletes ahead of the season proper in March.

Musinde, after an ordinary start, eased up the field but was just beaten to the line by unknown Prison talent Emmanuel Luda in heat one.

Luda was hand timed at 15.0 seconds and Musinde, who you could sense, still had a lot to offer, 15.2 seconds.

Musinde, 31, broke the national record with a time of 10.26 during the 2007 Algiers All Africa Games heats, but with so much promise, he failed to hit the 2008 Olympic qualifying times.

The Navy corporal disappeared from the radar after the 2008 African Athletic Championship, hampered by a serious hamstring injury only to reappear yesterday at Nyayo.
