University lecturers face the test in Cameroon

Some 103 university lecturers from 17 African countries are taking part in an examination in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The senior lecturers from member countries of the African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education, known by its French acronym as CAMES, are seeking to become associate professors.

Cameroon’s Higher Education minister and the current chair of CAMES, Prof Jacques Fame Ndongo, who launched the examination on the campus of the University of Yaoundé One, said a 34-man international jury had been mobilised to supervise the candidates.

“The university must no longer be a factory to manufacture the unemployed, it must guarantee the employability of graduates, train for stable, decent and secure jobs, make learners catalysts, job creators, managers of companies producing wealth for our countries,” Prof Ndongo told the lecturers.

Management sciences

The 103candidates, 33 of who are from Cameroon, are vying for promotions in law, history of institutions, political science and economic and management sciences.

The exercise ends on November 15.

CAMES member states include Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic and the Republic of Congo.

Others are Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, Chad, Senegal, and Togo.

CAMES secretary-general Prof Mbatchi Bertrand said the 18th session of the professorial test entails all three phases; a review of candidate’s academic work, evaluation of their areas of specialty and a dissertation prepared within eight hours by the candidate and defended before a jury.

Quality assurance

Prof Mbatchi said the Ouagadougou-based institution would celebrate its golden jubilee in May next year.

Created in 1968, CAMES is a regional body responsible for higher education accreditation and quality assurance in member countries.

CAMEs is also responsible for the implementation of higher education and research policies in several francophone countries in Africa.
