A Zimbabwean member of parliament is expected to appear in court for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl amid reports that he could face at least 10 rape charges.

The legislator, Franco Ndambakuwa, who is a member of President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF party, was arrested on Thursday for the attack that reportedly happened last year.

“I can confirm that the MP has been arrested on allegations of a raping a 15-year-old girl. That is all I can say at the moment as we are still carrying out investigations,” police spokesperson Assistant Wayne Bvudzijena told the state owned Herald newspaper.

The paper quoted unnamed sources claiming that at least 10 women were making allegations that Ndambakuwa raped them.

Police launched investigations into the rape allegations after the MP allegedly assaulted a villager who accused him of having an affair with his wife.

He is expected to appear in court on Monday for initial remand. Last year the MP was accused of impregnating a 17 year old girl.

The girl later committed suicide. Zanu PF supporters have in the past been accused of using rape to cow their opponents.
