Wydad Casablanca began the defence of their African Champions League crown with a thumping 7-2 win over Cote d'Ivoire's Williamsville.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring in Morocco, and at half-time it was 2-2 - but in the second period Wydad scored five times to earn an emphatic win.

Ismail el Haddad scored a hat-trick on Wednesday and coach Faouzi Benzarti is confident of back-to-back successes in the elite African club competition.

The other highlights from Wednesday's last-32 first-leg matches included a 4-0 home win for former champions TP Mazembe of DR Congo, who beat Songo of Mozambique thanks to a hat-trick from Ben Malango.

There were mixed results for some of the other big names in the draw.

And Nigeria's MFM earned a good 2-1 home win against Mouloudia Alger, but that away goal could make the difference when the second leg of the tie is played in Algeria later this month.
